Credit goes to the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, the oldest critics’ group in the country, for being able to gather its major winners for the awards ceremony held at the NBC Tent in Taguig City on Tuesday night.

All four acting winners turned up at the 36th Gawad Urian—which cannot be said of an earlier awards show that failed to attract big stars.

Top winners—best actress Nora Aunor (“Thy Womb”), actor Jericho Rosales (“Alagwa”), supporting actress Alessandra de Rossi (“Santa Niña”) and supporting actor Art Acuña (“Posas”)—personally received their trophies.

It is Aunor’s seventh Urian. She was the Manunuri’s first best actress in 1976 for Mario O’Hara’s “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos.”

‘Super happy’

Aunor told the Inquirer: “Super happy po ako. Malaking karangalan na manalo sa ibang bansa, pero mas masarap pa rin na kilalanin ng sarili mong mga kababayan (It’s a great honor to win abroad, but still better to be cited by your countrymen).”

Directed by Brillante Ma. Mendoza, “Thy Womb” recently won special mention at the Granada film fest in Spain. Aunor won best actress in Hong Kong and Brisbane for her role.
Mendoza won the best production design Urian trophy for “Thy Womb” on Tuesday.

Acuña, another repeat winner, won best supporting actor last year for “Niño.” Said Acuña: “To win twice … means I’m learning and growing and that the critics validate that.”

Rosales, a first-time Urian honoree like De Rossi, told the Inquirer: “Fifteen years in the making—it’s awesome… truly a milestone in my career. Like other awards, this is important to me because it brings hope to the industry. Our hard work is honored and valued.”

He earlier received an outstanding achievement in acting citation for Ian Loreños’ “Alagwa” at the Newport Beach film fest.

De Rossi said she had already felt like a winner with three nominations. “The award is just a bonus.”

Aunor has kept some of her previous (six) Urian trophies. She said the latest was now displayed in the living room of her condo unit.

Rosales said he would likewise display his Urian trophy in his living room “where my family can see it, then I will move it to my studio.”

Apart from the acting prizes, the creative and technical awards were also won by indies.

“Clearly, edgier and more compelling cinema is generated by indies who have free rein [of their work],” said Manunuri member Roland Tolentino.

Named best film was “Ang Paglalakbay ng mga Bituin sa Gabing Madilim,” directed by Davao-based Arnel Mardoquio. “I think this is the first time for a Mindanaoan film to win… I am proud and happy.”

Adolfo B. Alix Jr., best director  for “Mater Dolorosa,” described the prize as a “pleasant” surprise. “To be in the same roster as the directors I admire is an honor in itself,” he said. “Mater” is a tribute to his mother, who nurtured his love for cinema. “She allowed me to watch old films on TV,” Alix said.

Another Alix film, “Kalayaan,” won best editing for Aleks Castañeda.

Other winners

Other Urian winners this year: Mes de Guzman, best screenplay for “Diablo”; Whammy Alcazaren and Sasha Palomares, best cinematography, “Colossal”; Willy Fernandez and Lav Diaz, best sound, “Florentina Hubaldo CTE”; and Diwa de Leon, best music, “Baybayin.”
The Natatanging Gawad Urian was given to veteran actress Mila del Sol, who started in the movies in 1939.

Best documentary went to Benito Bautista’s “Harana” while Remton Siega Zuasola’s “Ritmo” was declared best short.

Said Bautista: “[Winning an Urian] is humbling and doubly inspiring.”

The 36th Gawad Urian will be aired on Cinema One tomorrow, 3 p.m. and 11 p.m., and on Sunday, 10 p.m.

NORA AUNOR CELEBRATES 60TH BIRTHDAY WITH CAREER RETROSPECTIVE

For Nora Aunor’s 60th birthday celebration, the entire Meralco Multi-Purpose Hall was transformed into a virtual museum as posters of her classic films — including “Guy & Pip”, “”Kastilyong Buhangin”, “Andrea, Paano Ba Ang Maging Isang Ina?”, “Atsay”, “My Bugoy Goes To Congress” and “Himala” — adorned the lobby and the hallway leading to the ballroom proper.

Songs recorded and popularized by La Aunor — such as her famous renditions of Hawaiian classics like “Blue Hawaii”, “Tiny Bubbles” and “Pearly Shells”, plus her version of Cinderella’s Manila Sound standard, “Superstar Ng Buhay Ko” — were also playing in the background prior to the start of the program.

Likewise, giant blow-up photos of the prized actress from various stages of her career spanning six decades enveloped the ballroom as well as a full-house of longtime fans, family members, friends, well-wishers and members of the media were on hand to celebrate another milestone in the life and times of the one and only Superstar.

The fast-paced and highly entertaining program dubbed as “Nora at 60: Superstar Noon, Ngayon at Bukas”, hosted by comedian Arnell Ignacio, began with an emotional opening prayer from Ate Guy’s adopted daughter, Matet de Leon.

“Hindi man perpekto ang pamilya namin, nagpapasalamat pa rin kami at binigyan n’yo kami ng isang mapagmahal na ina. Kahit minsan hindi po namin siya nadadalaw, alam naman po niya na kasama siya sa prayers namin. Mahal na mahal na mahal ka po namin,” Matet intoned.

When Arnell finally called La Aunor, she was escorted onstage by “Himala” screenwriter Ricky Lee. Immediately, she thanked TV5 for organizing her birthday celebration. “Sila po ang nagbigay ng ating salo-salo ngayong gabi,” she noted.

As Arnell bantered with Ate Guy, he observed the presence of other reporters from other networks and mused, “Iba ka talaga! Ikaw lang ang makakapagpunta ng representante ng bawat channel sa isang gathering!”
An audio-visual presentation detailing the career highlights of the Iriga-born phenomenon were then presented onscreen covering the many phases of her career — from winning singing contests like the “Darigold Jamboree” and “Tawag ng Tanghalan”, her well-loved loveteam with Tirso Cruz III, her long-running TV show, “Superstar”, her transformation as an award-winning actress all the way to her triumphant return from the US to her new home network, TV5.

Well-wishers who videotaped birthday messages for the Superstar included son Ian de Leon, ex-husband Christopher de Leon, former in-law Pilita Corrales, former leading man Cocoy Laurel, “Superstar” choreographer Geleen Eugenio, former manager Boy Abunda, “Thy Womb” director Brillante Mendoza, Ricky Lee, and colleagues Gabby Concepcion, Gary Valenciano, Eric Quizon, Dawn Zulueta, Alice Dixson, Judy Ann Santos and the hosts of “Good Morning Club”.

“Happy birthday! Senior citizen ka na!,” cracked Ian De Leon. “Huwag mong pababayaan ang sarili mo at ‘yung schedule mo.”

“The reason why I do what I do is first and foremost, tagahanga ako ni Ate Guy,” Abunda confessed.

Curiously, Lotlot De Leon, Nora’s other daughter was neither at the event nor recorded a videotaped message for her. Same with German Moreno, a longtime friend and co-host of Ate Guy in “Superstar”.

The event was also not without its share of entertainment as Kapatid stars Edgar Allan Guzman, Eula Caballero, Vin Abrenica and Nadine Samonte regaled the birthday celebrant and the rest of the audience with an energetic dance number to the tune of Hotdog’s “Annie Batungbakal”, from one of Nora’s famous musical films.

John Rendez, a longtime close friend of Ate Guy, also serenaded the actress with his rap number “There Can Only Be One”, while Morissette Amon, Gerald Santos, “Kanta Pilipinas” champion Chadleen Lacdo-o and Jaya also performed musical numbers.

The trailer from Nora’s latest movie, “Ang Kuwento ni Mabuti”, was also previewed as director Mes De Guzman expressed optimism that his non-traditional approach will be accepted by fans.

“Sana magustuhan po ninyo kahit experimental ang treatment ko dito at hindi traditional,” the director said.

Probably the biggest highlight of the celebration was the presence of Ate Guy’s longtime fans, many of whom are also now in their 60s. Coming from various parts of the country, these fans waited in line at the venue for as early as 4PM and bore gifts which they personally presented to Nora herself in their emotional meeting.

One even gave Ate Guy a big folding bed that prompted Arnell to once again exclaim, “Iba ka nga talaga! Ikaw lang ang artista ang nire-regaluhan ng kama sa birthday niya!”

As the theme of the celebration is about Nora’s past, present and future, director Joel Lamangan and TV5 business unit head JoAnn Bañaga went up the stage and announced a new project that will revive the Guy and Pip tandem.

Dubbed as “When I Fall In Love”, the upcoming series will also star Marvin Agustin, Akihiro Blanco, Karel Marquez and Nadine Samonte and will be directed by Lamangan himself.

HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY, MS. NORA AUNOR

Isang pagpupugay sa Nag-iisang Superstar
mula kay Fr. Rene Rodillas of  Diocese of Salt Lake City

Ika'y inaalipusta noong ika'y nagsisimula,

Nora AUNOR, HENYO kang talaga!

Subalit isa man sa kanila'y walang makapantay
pero ika'y nananatiling mababang-loob at mapagpakumbaba.

at pilit ginagaya natamo mong tagumpay

Ms. NORA AUNOR: LIGHT OF CULTURE AWARDEE

LIGHT OF CULTURE AWARDS
By ISAGANI CRUZ

NORA AUNOR for pioneering in the integration of theater, television, and film.

March is World Theater Month, and March 27 is World Theater Day. Spearheading the worldwide celebration is the International Theatre Institute, the UNESCO World Organization for the Performing Arts.
Last year, Manila was the global launch site of the 50th anniversary of World Theater Day. In her message that year, Irina Bokova, the Director General of UNESCO, said, “Theater has the power to move, inspire, transform and educate in ways that no other art form can. Theater reflects both the extraordinary diversity of cultures and our shared human condition, in all its vulnerability and strength.”
Nobel Prize laureate Dario Fo (who has also been to Manila, by the way) is this year’s writer of the traditional World Theater Day Message. In the message, Fo attributes the decline of theater audiences to an attempt by those in power to silence actors and theater companies. He quotes Saint Carlo Borromeo, who wrote in the 16th century, “Concerned with eradicating the evil weed, we have done our utmost to burn texts containing infamous speeches, to eradicate them from the memory of people, and at the same time to prosecute also those who divulged such texts in print. How far more devastating to the minds of adolescents and young girls is the spoken word and the appropriate gesture, than a dead word printed in books. It is therefore urgent to rid our cities of theater makers, as we do with unwanted souls.”
Fo could actually have chosen a more suitable quote. Then archbishop of Milan, Borromeo excommunicated everyone who watched a play. He believed that theater “substituted illusion for reality, denied temporal space and time, and trafficked in dreams and imaginings.”
The Philippine Centre of the International Theatre Institute and the ITI-Earthsavers UNESCO Dream Center are taking the lead in celebrating World Theater Month in our country. Among several projects ongoing is a World Theater Festival on Radio, aired over Radyo Balintataw on DZRH on weekdays.
A highlight of the Philippine celebration is the awarding of this year’s Lampara ng Kultura (Light of Culture) Awards. (Since next week is Holy Week, the awards will be given after World Theater Month.) The awards are given annually to individuals and corporations or groups that have helped spread the light of Philippine culture and arts inside and outside the country.
This year’s batch of awardees include:
AIR 21 for sponsoring the first Philippine participation in the Prague Quadrennial on Performance Design and Space, run by the International Organisation for Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT).
PLDT-SMART for assisting global connectivity for the Tri-Continental Intercultural Dialogue on Defying Disasters.
CHOWKING and SAN MIG COFFEE for sponsoring the ITI program of Cultural Caregiving Services for vulnerable groups.
SM for providing venues for arts events, particularly those involving persons with disabilities.
METROBANK for its continuing patronage of arts competitions and arts education.
LISA MACUJA for popularizing ballet, integrating indigenous art forms, and initiating international interactive dance projects.
LEA SALONGA and MONIQUE WILSON for projecting Filipino excellence in acting and singing and lending their popularity for social causes.
NORA AUNOR for pioneering in the integration of theater, television, and film.
JUVENAL SANSO for integrating painting with stage design.
ALBERTO FLORENTINO for excelling in the art of playwriting, particularly in the field of social realism.
DANNY DOLOR for animating culture among various schools groups, primarily Emilio Aguinaldo College Theatre Center.
ROSALINDA OROSA for being the Dean of Culture and Arts Criticism in media.
BOY ABUNDA for theater patronage through media, promotions, and arts communication.
GEORGE YANG for promoting scholarship in the field of music and performing in concerts and theater presentations.
A special International Award is being given this year to the SEOUL INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS, headed by Duk Hyung Yoo, for its collaborative projects with Philippine theater groups.
The selection committee consisted of Vilma Labrador (chair), Cecile Guidote Alvarez, Heherson Alvarez, Fray Paulo Casurao, Tomas Ongoco, Fernando Peña, Frank Rivera, Jose Laderas Santos, and myself.
